 Abstract

This paper touches upon why many women choose to become witches in the New Age of religion and spiritual awakening. It speaks on how witchcraft has changed from the prosecution and execution of witches during the Salem Witch Trials to the rise of modern witchcraft by Gerald Gardner and many other influencers. Women embrace witchcraft because it can offer re-enchantment for them, a way to achieve wish-fulfillment and change their outlook on life. They can attempt to change the existing way of life through spells, feminism, and coping with past trauma in their lives. It is also noted how the reclamation of witches from their past image has also helped with the goal of re-enchantment and empowerment.

  You cannot discuss the topic of witchcraft without diving deep into Wicca. Wicca is a modern Pagan “religion” developed in the early twentieth century. I put religion in quotation marks because it is not formally known as a religion, nor do many scholars and people a part of Wicca call it that.     The idea of witches and magic has been around for centuries, the first mention of one being in the bible over 600 years before the common era. Witches have always been seen as this evil being that can perform magic against the fate of others and have a connection to the undead. Today they are mostly seen as folklore, a fun Halloween costume, or a fun fantasy element to a storyline. But is there some truth to witchcraft that our world just can't seem to explain yet?      Most people connect the idea of witchcraft to the Salem Witch Trials where many people would kill young girls and women who they believed to be witches. This started when two young girls began convulsing and having delusions, which we now believe is due to a medical reason. They would put these women through tests in order to determine whether they were a witch or not, which would ultimately end up in their deaths no matter what.
